Shipping giant A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) announced that it has signed an agreement with Anemoi Marine Technologies for the first-ever wind-powered Rotor Sail installation on a container vessel, supporting the company’s efforts to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions.
Founded in 2015, London-based Anemoi develops wind propulsion systems for commercial shipping. The company’s Rotor Sail technology harnesses wind power to provide auxiliary vessel propulsion, helping reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Anemoi said that it typically installs between three and five Rotor Sails, up to 35 metres in height, on each vessel, with each Rotor Sail saving approximately one ton of fuel per day and around three tons of CO₂ emissions.
Under the agreement, Anemoi will design, manufacture and deliver a 5m diameter, 35m high fixed Rotor Sail for installation on one of Maersk’s 8,700 TEU Lima Class vessels, which will continue operating in regular commercial service throughout the trial.
The companies said that the system will be integrated alongside existing onboard systems, with Anemoi providing support throughout engineering and installation. The Rotor Sail is due to be fitted in mid-2027 and will be piloted during the vessel’s regular operation, which is expected to be North and South Atlantic voyages.
According to the companies, the project will mark the first installation of Rotor Sails on a container vessel. Anemoi has previously deployed the technology across other vessel segments, including bulk carriers.

It has already been tested in other parts of the shipping sector, and we see this pilot with Anemoi as a valuable opportunity to build practical experience and assess its relevance for our fleet and for container shipping more broadly.”
