The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) announced an investment of up to $100 million in global alternative asset firm TPG’s Global South-Focused Climate Solutions Strategy, with a $50 million commitment to the TPG Rise Climate Global South Initiative (GSI) Fund, and up to $50 million in co-investments.
The fund is designed to attract long-term private capital for high-impact climate opportunities in emerging and developing economies, targeting investments in energy transition, green mobility, sustainable fuels, sustainable materials and products, carbon solutions, and climate adaptation and resilience.
The GSI strategy was initially unveiled in December 2023 at the Dubai COP28 climate conference, targeting $2.5 billion in total capital commitments. The strategy aims to attract institutional capital by offering return enhancement to encourage private equity investments in high growth climate opportunities across the Global South.
In September 2024, TPG announced that it had raised $1.25 billion in initial capital commitments for the strategy, including a $500 million commitment from UAE-backed climate investment platform ALTÉRRA, as well as capital from TPG Rise Climate II and institutional investors across Asia and North America.
The fund is classified as Article 9 under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, a designation for financial products with sustainable investment as an objective.
Kim-See Lim, AIIB Chief Investment Officer, Public Sector (Region 1) & Financial Institutions and Funds (Global) Clients, said:
“Through this partnership with TPG, AIIB is supporting the expansion of innovative climate solutions in emerging markets, while strengthening climate finance ecosystems across our members, in line with our corporate target to direct 50% of annual financing to private-sector-oriented operations by 2030.”
